Subject:
The right to vote freely and fairly is under attack
Dear Senator Griff, As you know, In late October, the Government introduced the Electoral Legislation Amendment (Voter Integrity) Bill 2021 into the House of Representatives. The laws would require people to provide a prescribed, valid form of ID to voting officers when attending a polling place to vote. If these laws go ahead, it’s going to make it much harder for people to vote. This is in comparison to evidence from the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) that confirmed the incidence of people voting twice in elections is “vanishingly small”. Last election, 19 suspected multiple voters were sent to the Australian Federal Police to be investigated, and none were prosecuted. In short, there is no evidence these laws are needed. These laws will create new and arbitrary barriers to voting for a large number of people, including First Nations communities. Many First Nations communities already find it difficult to engage with political processes in this country. Permanency of residence or a fixed address are often essential in obtaining most forms of identification, but for First Nations People - especially those living in remote parts of the country - this can be a huge hurdle to overcome. Additionally, many forms of acceptable identification outlined in the Bill presume a fixed or conventional address which is not the case for a lot of people in Australia, including those who are experiencing homelessness or are transitioning from prison. First Nations People in this country only received the right to vote in 1984 and through the barriers and obstacles being put in place through these laws, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to be deprived of their rights. Political participation is a human right - voting should be accessible, free and fair. Attempts by the Government to disenfranchise people from participating in the Parliamentary process should be opposed at every opportunity. Please, do not support this Bill.
