Please support democracy and peace in Myanmar
Australia is a vibrant democracy and a leader in the Indo-Pacific region. As my elected representative, I call on you to demand the Australian Government do more to support the people of Myanmar. Myanmar is facing a civil war. Thousands are dying from COVID-19 and the military regime continues to use violence on women, men and children. The military junta is now responsible for over a thousand deaths and has placed thousands of citizens under arbitrary arrest. Dozens of children have been killed by the junta, some as young as six years old cruelly shot in their homes. COVID-19 is now being weaponised by the military junta. People are being deliberately denied urgent medical care and vaccination programs have stalled. Hospitals have been targeted. Doctors and nurses are beaten up and arrested whilst performing their duties to save lives. Myanmar's health system has collapsed. Prisoners in Myanmar also remain at risk due to the spread of COVID-19, with chronic overcrowding and systemic violations to their human rights. We call for Australian Dr Sean Turnell, imprisoned in Yangon for over six months and who has revealed COVID-19 symptoms, to be released immediately and allowed to return to Australia freely to undergo urgent medical treatment. Millions of people in Myanmar now face hunger and an ongoing terror campaign by the military junta. Australia must join other major democracies and make stronger efforts to cut the corrupt and murderous military regime’s access to money and foreign investment. This means sanctions and stopping the flow of foreign currency from important sectors such as oil, gas and mining. I CALL UPON YOU, as my elected Member of Parliament, to request Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne and the Australian Government to take these three positive actions to support the people of Myanmar: - Donate much needed COVID-19 vaccine supplies to Myanmar and work with multilateral partners such as UNICEF, ASEAN and the World Health Organization to create a joint international taskforce to ensure urgent medical assistance is delivered quickly and effectively to responsible health agencies and independent organisations in Myanmar to deal with COVID-19. - Impose immediate sanctions on coup leader Snr General Min Aung Hlaing, military leaders and their relatives, as well as members of the State Administrative Council (the military junta), and military controlled entities and state-owned enterprises, including Myanmar Economic Holdings Public Company Limited (MEHL), Myanmar Economic Corporation Limited (MEC) and the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE). - Support and engage with Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) and the Committee Representing the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) as the legitimately elected representatives of their country, having gained 76% of the people's vote at the November 2020 election. We urge the Australian Government to reject the credentials of the State Administrative Council (the military junta) at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly and instead support the credentialing of the National Unity Government as the legitimate representatives of the people of Myanmar.
