COP29 Action: Azerbaijani Embassy

Demand the immediate and unconditional release of Anar Mammadli and the dropping of all charges against Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu, both Azerbaijani human rights defenders and climate advocates facing politically motivated charges.

As Azerbaijan prepares to host the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) this November, it should be leading by example in upholding environmental justice and human rights. As Azerbaijan prepares to host the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) this November, it should be leading by example in upholding environmental justice and human rights. However, rather than embracing this opportunity, Azerbaijani authorities have intensified a brutal crackdown on activists who advocate for democracy, transparency, and climate justice. Anar Mammadli and Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu, two prominent voices for change, now face politically motivated charges, targeted solely for their peaceful work.

Anar Mammadli, a climate advocate and co-founder of the Climate of Justice Initiative, is detained in poor conditions, where his health has been deteriorating due to a lack of adequate medical care. Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu, a respected economist and anti-corruption activist, has been placed under house arrest after months in detention. He remains restricted in his movements and is denied the essential medical treatment he urgently needs.

Their unjust treatment represents a wider pattern of repression in Azerbaijan, particularly aimed at silencing critical voices ahead of COP29. As the world turns its attention to Azerbaijan for this climate summit, we must highlight the ongoing abuses against those who dare to stand up for human rights and environmental justice. This is our moment to call for a safe, inclusive COP29 that respects and protects activists, not punishes them.

Take action now and send a message to the Azerbaijani Embassy in Australia, urging them to convey Australia’s call for the immediate and unconditional release of Anar Mammadli and the dropping of all charges against Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu. Demand justice and remind Azerbaijan of its responsibility, as the host of COP29, to uphold the values of human rights and climate justice.
