Release them now
Your Excellency, I am concerned that the Uyghurs in Australia have not heard from their family members in Xinjiang in many years, and many are detained in prison or in internment camps. Those people include; - Buzainafu Abudourexiti, who is serving a seven-year sentence at Urumqi Women’s Prison following a secret trial in 2017, - Mirzat Taher, an Australian permanent resident, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison in April 2021, - Mahira Yakub, who was detained in April 2019, and was accused of “giving material support to terrorist activity” for transferring money to her parents in Australia, - Muherrem Ablet and her two children haven't communicated with her husband in Australia since 2017, and - Abiz Tohti and Aygul Heyit, who have been detained since February 2018. Their daughter, an Australian citizen, hasn’t heard from them since. I urge you to call on: - Immediately release these people, and all people detained in internment camps and in prisons in Xinjiang, unless there is sufficient, credible and admissible evidence that they have committed an internationally recognized offence, - Pending their release, disclose their whereabouts, allow them to communicate with their family and access to a lawyer of their choice, and ensure they are not subjected to torture and other ill-treatment.
