Urgent: Call on Israel to End Its Brutal Occupation and Ban Imports from Illegal Settlements.
Dear Senator Wong, In a historic vindication of Palestinians’ rights, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared in an advisory opinion that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is unlawful. This landmark ruling recognises the brutal and oppressive military occupation as illegal, marking a pivotal moment for international justice. In its opinion, the Court reaffirmed the responsibility of all states “not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by Israel’s illegal presence”. While I commend your strong stance against extremist Israeli settlers, I am writing to urge you to also take a firm stand against the import of goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements to Australia and call on Israel to end its brutal occupation of the Palestinian Territories. These settlements violate international law and the rights of Palestinians, as highlighted by the ICJ's findings. Since 7 October 2023, the escalating violence has resulted in over 38,000 Palestinian deaths and over 89,000 injuries. Israel continues to flout international law by targeting civilians and denying humanitarian aid. During this humanitarian catastrophe, Israel has expanded settlements in occupied territories and ignored ICJ orders to prevent genocide in Gaza. By banning the import of these products and calling on Israel to end its brutal occupation of the Palestinian Territories, Australia can take a clear and actionable step to uphold international law and human rights. This measure aligns with our commitment to justice and supports the broader international community's efforts to address these violations. I kindly request your immediate attention to this matter and look forward to your response on the actions you will take to support this crucial issue. Thank you for your time and consideration.
