What’s the policy proposal?

Labor is proposing to unlink the refugee sponsorship program from the Australian government’s humanitarian intake program. It’s a small detail, but it would mean that community groups and businesses in Australia could help many more people seeking refuge, above and beyond what our government has committed to resettling.

How we’ll get this important policy change across the line:

  • We’ve already gathered mass public support to get community sponsorship on the political agenda – through a 23,000+ petition and with the backing of local councils, community leaders and organisations.

  • Supporters now email Labor MPs and Senators, asking them to represent your views on improving the refugee sponsorship at the upcoming National Labor Party conference.

  • Thanks to your pressure, the Australia Labor Party adopts an improved refugee sponsorship program as part of their policy platform.

  • Liberal MPs see the growing community support for refugee sponsorship and adopt an improved policy as well.
